| If you already have a security system but would like to change monitoring companies, you have some options. |
|||||
| It is possible to change your monitoring company, in most cases, without too much fuss. If you are considering making that change, here are some questions to ask the security companies. |
|||||
| Will it cost anything for you to take over the system? |
Be sure you get the answer to this question! Top-tier security companies will take over existing systems at no charge, but there could be exceptions - the security system representative should be able to tell you. |
| What about my existing monitoring contract? |
Chances are, the contract that you signed obligated you to remain with your current monitoring company for a set number of years. That obligation won't be waived, so make sure you're within 3 to 6 months of the end of that obligation before you start shopping for a new monitoring company. |
| What if I want to add new devices to my system once you take it over? |
Most top-tier companies will be able to add on to your existing system. Be sure to ask about this when the security system representative is looking at your existing system. |
| Is there a contract for just monitoring? |
Typically, the new monitoring company will ask you to make a commitment to stay with them for 1, 2 or 3 years, so expect to sign a contract. The benefit to you is that it should fix the monitoring charge for the life of the contract. And remember, read the entire contract - front and back - before you sign it. |
