If you already have a security system but would like to change
monitoring companies, you have some options.
It is possible to change your monitoring company, in most cases, without too much fuss.

If you are considering making that change, here are some questions to ask the security
companies.

Will it cost anything for you to take
over the system?
Be sure you get the answer to this
question! Top-tier security companies will
take over existing systems at no charge,
but there could be exceptions - the
security system representative should be
able to tell you.
What about my existing monitoring
contract?
Chances are, the contract that you signed
obligated you to remain with your current
monitoring company for a set number of
years. That obligation won't be waived, so
make sure you're within 3 to 6 months of
the end of that obligation before you start
shopping for a new monitoring company.
What if I want to add new devices to
my system once you take it over?
Most top-tier companies will be able to
add on to your existing system. Be sure to
ask about this when the security system
representative is looking at your existing
system.
Is there a contract for just
monitoring?
Typically, the new monitoring company
will ask you to make a commitment to stay
with them for 1, 2 or 3 years, so expect to
sign a contract.  The benefit to you is that it
should fix the monitoring charge for the
life of the contract. And remember,  read
the entire contract - front and back - before
you sign it.
